Residential

Located in San Francisco, we welcome women from all over the world to participate in our residential eating disorders treatment program.  Unlike the vast majority of residential facilities in the United States, New Dawn Eating Disorders Recovery Center offers the full continuum of care necessary to complete the recovery process.  This means that you have the choice for your core treatment team (e.g., individual psychotherapist, clinical dietician, medical doctor, family psychotherapist) to remain constant as you graduate from residential treatment and transition into day treatment, intensive outpatient program, and outpatient services.  At New Dawn Eating Disorders Recovery Center, we believe in accompanying you on the full journey of recovery.  Such a journey allows for a deeper, more powerfully mutative process.  We understand that recovery from an eating disorder takes time and that a constant shifting in providers can obstruct and prevent a more profound kind of healing.

Professional Staff

We are proud of our highly qualified and compassionate staff.  During your residential stay, medical monitoring will be provided by Dr. Diana Amodia, psychiatric oversight will be provided by Dr. Adair Look, individual/family/group psychotherapy will be provided by Dr. Erin Elfant-Rea and her team of psychologists and psychotherapists, and nutritional therapy and support will be provided by our dietician team, Lynne Martin, Sabine Haake, and Laura Scherling.  Our nurse practitioner, Lucretia Bolin, and her crew of residential counseling staff are available around the clock to ensure an atmosphere of safety and nurturance.

Environment of Healing And “Real World” Interaction

Our intimate 12-bed home in San Francisco is comfortably furnished both indoors and outdoors.

The fact that our home is located in the heart of Pacific Heights, a charming San Francisco neighborhood, fits with our philosophy that recovery need not occur in isolation or away from the “real world”.  We want our residents to feel prepared to return to their lives following treatment, so we provide a plethora of opportunities to interact with “real world” situations by way of community outings as well as Monday-Friday involvement in services at our Outpatient Clinic in Sausalito.

Therapeutic Community

Our residential program offers a therapeutic community whose mission is to offer a supportive and structured environment from which to overcome eating disorders and related psychiatric symptoms.

We emphasize a collaborative, supportive, structured and de-institutionalized approach to the treatment of eating disorders.   We promote a culture of emotional expression, assertive participation, and proactive recovery.

Our community offers a safe environment with a clear set of guidelines and expectations where residents have the opportunity to shed unhealthy behaviors and replace them with positive coping skills.  Traditional individual, family, and group psychotherapy, supervised meals/snacks, nutritional counseling, and medical and psychiatric monitoring are integral to the treatment, as well as more creative and alternative avenues of healing such as expressive arts, movement therapy, meditation, and acupuncture.

The communal aspect of treatment allows for learning to occur in even the most routine interactions of daily life.  This leads to a positive change in interpersonal functioning, including improved communication, assertiveness, and feelings of connectedness.  Furthermore, our program reinforces the notion of personal responsibility which has an empowering impact on the eating disorder recovery process.

Our Treatment Model

At New Dawn Eating Disorders Recovery Center, treatment is collaborative rather than imposed, and we strive for our relationships with each client to be characterized by genuineness, trust, and respect.  We emphasize a “here-and-now” approach to recovery, believing that the interpersonal issues that occur while in treatment often manifest themselves in the client’s outside life and, therefore, warrant a great deal of sensitivity, exploration, and feedback.  We teach our clients empirically-supported therapeutic techniques and give ample opportunities to practice these new tools.  While in no way exhaustive, here is a list of common tools acquired in treatment at New Dawn Eating Disorders Recovery Center.

  • Body Acceptance
  • Cognitive Restructuring
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Stress Management and Relaxation
  • Assertiveness
  • Mindfulness
  • Self-Monitoring and Journaling
  • Healthy Eating

Relapse Prevention and Aftercare

While many Eating Disorders Treatment Facilities only provide Residential treatment, we also offer step-down levels of care such as Day Treatment, Intensive Outpatient Treatment, and outpatient services.   These programs are covered by most insurance plans, and promote the ongoing recovery and support that has been clinically proven to reduce the chance of relapse which occurs most often during the first six months following Residential Treatment.
